"Research and Innovation in High Added Value Sectors Paradigm for Competitiveness and Growth"

The final conference of the I3E project took place in Athens on May 28th, 2012. The conference was held at the Corallia, Athens InnoCentre located in Marousi, Athens. The conference main target was the dissemination of the main project results, i.e. the Strategic Research Agenda in the sectors of Embedded Systems and Industrial Informatics and the Methodology Guide on Innovation, built during the three year long project duration. The conference opened with a welcome speech by the General Secretary of Research and Technology, of the Greek Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs, Mr. Kostas Kokkinoplitis, who emphasized the need for innovation for Europe and Greece. Short welcome speeches were also given by I3E Lead Partner Industrial Systems Institute director, Professor Dimitrios Serpanos, a well as by Odessa National Polytechnic University Rector Professor Gennadii Oborskyi and Corallia event-host director Professor Vasilios Makios. The first keynote speech, given by EC Head of Sector “ICT for Factories of the Future” Dr. Erastos Filos, was relevant to the future of the manufacturing sector in Europe and the relevant Factories of the Future initiative, an initiative strongly related both with the areas of Industrial Informatics and Embedded Systems.

The second keynote speech was given by Dr Athanasios Poulakidas from the Hellenic Aerospace Industry, providing a description of the Embedded Systems sector and the ARTEMISIA Joint Undertaking. Professor Gerhard Fohler of the Technical University of Kaiserslautern presented main challenges and visions for the Embedded Systems sector, narrowing up to adaptive resource management, multitude of resources, interfaces and interaction from chip to wide networks, mixed criticality support, and true parallelism. Following the keynote speeches, a second session was dedicated to the presentation of the project major outcomes, the Methodology Guide on Innovation presented by Project Coordinator Dr Athanasios Kalogeras of the Research Centre ATHENA, the Strategic Research Agenda presented by Dr Aleksey Bratukhin of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the overall networking and capacity building activities of the project shown by Dejan Gradisar of Josef Stefan Institute.

The third session of the conference focused on networking with successful experiences and projects in South East Europe. In this context, Dr Dimitrios Mavrikios presented the Laboratory of Manufacturing Systems and Automation at the University of Patras and its achieved excellence relevant to manufacturing systems. Ms. Julia Foca of Corallia presented the South East European Network-of-Excellence of Cluster Organisations ‘SEENECO’ project, aiming at creating excellent cluster formations in South East Europe following the Corallia paradigm. FORSEE project and its RTDI Foresight were presented by Ms Effie Dalakiouridou of the University of Macedonia, Greece, a potential capitalization of the I3E Strategic Research Agenda, moving a step towards its utilization for future foresight. ENSEMBLE project and its vision on Enterprise Interoperability were presented by Dr. Fenareti Lampathaki of the Greek Interoperability Centre at the National Technical University of Athens, interoperability being an important topic for both industrial informatics and embedded systems.

Professor Vesna Mandic presented the Virtual Manufacturing Network formulated in Serbia and Western Balkan countries, a good paradigm of networking over 1200 stakeholders. Mr Peter Statev presented the Bulgarian ICT Cluster, one of two successful clusters in Bulgaria and a good example of successful results when different stakeholders join forces. Finally, conference host Professor Vasilios Makios presented Corallia, the Hellenic Technology Clusters Initiative and its achievements relevant to the micro and nano-electronics and embedded systems sectors in Greece, followed by a visit to the Corallia Athens InnoCentre Exhibition area, where cluster companies exhibit their products and developments

The conference concluded with a round table discussion on the status and vision of innovation in South East Europe. The round table coordinated by Dr Athanasios Kalogeras of Research Centre ATHENA was attended by Dr Erastos Filos, EC Head of Sector, Ms Irena Mladenova of the Office of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Professor Stavros Koubias, former Rector of the University of Patras, Greece, Professor Tiberiu Letia, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and Ms Spela Stres, Josef Stefan Institute, Slovenia. The discussion was relevant to the policies that could influence innovation and competitiveness in the area of South East Europe and the need for a cultural change in the long term on the perception of innovation and entrepreneurship in the area, while influencing policies towards innovation driven knowledge intensive paradigms in the short term.
